Animal studies also show that early exposure to air pollutants can influence brain structures and functions later on in life.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/hertinglab.usc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/cars-in-a-rush-hour-1476873351ZhS-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"200\"><\/p>\n<p>The American Lung Association's 2016 \"State of the Air\" report found more than half (52.1%) of the people in the United States live in counties that have unhealthy air. In&nbsp;Los Angeles, schools and houses continue to be built by freeways.<\/p>\n<p>A new avenue of research for The Herting Laboratory is the <strong>AIR, BRAIN, AND BEHAVIOR (ABB) STUDY<\/strong>, which aims&nbsp;to assess&nbsp;how pollutants in the air may influence the brain and subsequent cognition.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, we are teaming up with scientists from the <a href=\"https:\/\/healthstudy.usc.edu\/\">Children's Health Study<\/a> in order to examine how&nbsp;air pollution during childhood and adolescence may influence brain structure and function in adulthood.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"454\" src=\"http:\/\/hertinglab.usc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/MRI-for-Air-Pollution_ABB-copy-1024x454.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/hertinglab.usc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/MRI-for-Air-Pollution_ABB-copy-1024x454.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/hertinglab.usc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/MRI-for-Air-Pollution_ABB-copy-300x133.jpg 300w, http:\/\/hertinglab.usc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/MRI-for-Air-Pollution_ABB-copy-768x341.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><\/p>\n<p>The ABB study uses a variety of MRI scan types to better understand how air pollution may impact the brain.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A&nbsp;recent article in Science&nbsp;[The Polluted Brain] suggests that air pollution exposure might influence the brain and how it ages.
